⚡ Quick Answer
To calculate water heater capacity, multiply your household by 15–20 litres of stored hot water per person for apartments, or 20–25 litres per person for villas with bathtubs — then check it against bathrooms and simultaneous use. A 2-person apartment needs roughly 30–50L; a 4-person villa with two bathrooms needs 80–100L; 6+ people need 150–200L or solar. In Dubai’s false-ceiling installations, ceiling height also limits your options — message Dubai Profixer on WhatsApp 052 460 1612 with your people count and bathroom count and we’ll tell you how to calculate water heater capacity for your exact household, plus today’s exact supply + installation quote.

How to Calculate Water Heater Capacity
Forget showroom rules of thumb. Here is how to calculate water heater capacity the same way our technicians do on every Dubai survey.
Step 1 — Count your people and their showers
Start with the humans. Each person who takes a daily shower needs 15–20 litres of stored hot water in an apartment, or 20–25 litres in a villa with a bathtub. So a 2-person apartment starts at 30–40L, while a 4-person villa starts at 80–100L. Children under 10 count as roughly half a person each — they use less water, and they don’t all shower back-to-back at 7 AM.
Step 2 — Count bathrooms and simultaneous use
People don’t shower in shifts in real life. If two bathrooms run at once during the morning rush, a 50L tank empties in about 25–30 minutes of continuous flow and needs around 2 hours to fully reheat (element 1.2–2 kW depending on model variant). Add one size up if two people regularly shower at the same time. A household of 3 with two busy bathrooms is happier on 80L than 50L, even though 3 × 15L = 45L looks fine on paper.
Step 3 — Add your Dubai adjustments
This is the part generic calculators get wrong. Dubai apartments and villas add four local twists: summer inlet water arrives near 35°C (your tank effectively delivers more usable hot water), hard water scales the element over time (reducing real output if you skip maintenance), ceiling-void height limits physical tank size, and older buildings sometimes cap the electrical load. We cover all four in the Dubai Realities panel below — read it before you buy.
Worked example — 2-bedroom Marina apartment
A couple, one bathroom, morning showers back-to-back. Calculation: 2 people × 15–20L = 30–40L. Single bathroom, no simultaneous use. Verdict — 50L (the nearest standard size up, with a comfort margin). This is exactly why the 50-litre water heater is Dubai’s most popular size — it fits the most common apartment household perfectly.
Worked example — 4-bedroom villa in Arabian Ranches
Four people, two bathrooms plus a guest powder room, morning rush hour with two showers running. Calculation: 4 people × 20–25L = 80–100L, plus one size up for simultaneous use. Verdict — 100L as the minimum, and worth discussing 150L if teenagers and guests are in the picture. See our 100-litre guide for the full breakdown.
The Complete 10L to 200L Comparison
Every standard electric storage size available in Dubai — who it’s for, and where we install it for you. Once you know how to calculate water heater capacity, this table makes the pick obvious.
| Size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 10 litre | Single sink or washbasin — kitchen, pantry, office pantry, salon basin. One outlet, one person at a time. Our smallest supply + install job. 10L guide → |
| 15 litre | Kitchen + one basin, small office kitchens, staff pantries. Covers one hot tap properly, struggles with a shower. 15L guide → |
| 30 litre | 1–2 people, one bathroom — studio or 1-bedroom apartment. Roughly 15 minutes of continuous showering. 30L guide → |
| 50 litre | 2–4 people, 1–2 bathrooms — Dubai’s most popular size. ~25–30 minutes of continuous showering. Fits most apartment ceiling voids. 50L guide → |
| 80 litre | 3–5 people, 2 bathrooms — family apartments and small villas. Handles the morning rush without the second shower going cold. 80L guide → |
| 100 litre | 4–6 people, villas with 2–3 bathrooms. Needs a decent ceiling void or utility space — check headroom before buying. 100L guide → |
| 200 litre | 6+ people, large villas, staff accommodation, small commercial — restaurants, salons, clinics. At this size, also compare with solar. 200L guide → |

Sizing for offices and commercial spaces
Commercial sizing runs on peak-hour demand, not people count. A salon with three basins running hot all afternoon, a restaurant kitchen at lunch rush, or staff accommodation with shift workers — each needs its own calculation. The rule: estimate your busiest hour’s hot-water use, then pick the tank that covers it with a margin. Multiple smaller tanks in parallel often beat one giant unit for commercial sites — if one fails, you’re not completely dry. Message us with your setup and we’ll size it properly.
5 Sizing Mistakes We See Weekly
We replace wrongly-sized heaters across Dubai every week. These are the patterns.
Undersizing — the classic
A 30L in a 3-person flat means the last shower is lukewarm every morning. If you’re replacing an undersized unit, the replacement visit is your one chance to fix the size — we resize before we refit.
Oversizing — the quiet thief
A 100L for a couple heats 60 litres nobody uses, every single day. On a standard 1.2–2 kW element that’s real money on your DEWA bill for zero benefit.
Ignoring simultaneous use
Three people who never shower together fit 50L. Three people racing out the door at 7 AM don’t. Ask about the morning routine, not just the headcount.
Forgetting the ceiling void
A 100L or 200L tank physically may not fit a low apartment false ceiling. We measure headroom during the survey — buying first and measuring later is backwards.
Assuming instant = upgrade
Switching from storage to instant sounds modern, but most Dubai apartments can’t feed its 3–7 kW demand without rewiring. Bigger storage is usually the honest answer.
When to Upsize During Replacement
Your old heater dies once a decade. Knowing how to calculate water heater capacity makes that visit the cheapest moment to fix a wrong size.
- The family grew — the 50L that served a couple now serves two kids. Go to 80L while we’re already up in the ceiling.
- Morning wars started — if the second shower has been lukewarm for a year, don’t replace like-for-like. Size up.
- A bathroom was added — an extra bathroom changes the simultaneous-use maths. Recalculate.
- Tenants complain — landlords, an undersized heater in a rental is a complaint generator. Size for occupancy, not for the last tenant.
- It was right — keep it — if the size worked and only the tank died, we say so honestly and fit the same litres.

Dubai Realities Nobody Else Mentions
Generic sizing calculators were written for London and Texas. Here’s the Dubai edition.
Summer hands you free capacity
August inlet water arrives near 35°C, so your tank’s stored heat stretches further — a 50L behaves like a bigger unit for half the year. Don’t oversize for a winter problem.
Hard water quietly steals litres
Scale coats the element and eats real heating power year after year. A descaled 50L outperforms a neglected 80L — annual maintenance protects your sizing maths too.
Ceiling voids set hard limits
Low false ceilings in older towers physically cap tank size. We measure headroom on every survey — the right size is the one that actually fits above your bathroom.
Old buildings cap the electrics
Some older towers share water-heater circuits or limit loads. We verify a proper dedicated circuit before installing — a bigger tank on a weak circuit just trips breakers.
